Espace + Village revitalise le quartier LGBTQ+ en créant un pôle multifonctionnel inclusif, avec des espaces communautaires, culturels et de soutien. Vue Sainte Catherine Vue Intérieur Vue toiture Vue Sainte Catherine 1/3 The Future of the Village... Espace + Village aims to revitalize the Village as a thriving space for community life, connection, and support for LGBTQ+ people, while highlighting the value and diversity of these communities to all Montrealers. AN INCLUSIVE AND MULTIFUNCTIONAL HUB The project includes the creation of a variety of spaces to meet the specific needs of the LGBTQ+ communities served and LGBTQ+ organizations. These facilities will include community spaces, cultural venues, offices, consultation and meeting spaces, conference rooms, coworking spaces, and a multifunctional event hall, in addition to a rooftop terrace. Several spaces will be accessible to the public so that they can be rented by as many people as possible. The multifunctional room will meet a variety of needs and allow for the organization of different events open to the general public. A POSITIVE IMPACT FOR MONTREAL AND THE VILLAGE This project will significantly benefit the Village and the city of Montreal by providing a centralized hub for LGBTQ+ community resources. This hub is part of the Village's intervention strategy. By bringing these resources together in one place, Espace LGBTQ+ contributes to the preservation of quality spaces and plays a crucial role in ensuring accessibility to services for 2SLGBTQIA+ populations. Une partie importante du territoire n’a jamais été cédé par voie de traité. C’est le cas de Tio’tia:ke, sur lequel s’inscrit le projet d’Espace + Village. Nous tenons à exprimer notre reconnaissance envers les Kanien’kehá:ka, les Gardiens de la porte de l’Est de la Confédération Haudenosaunee. Ce territoire est aujourd’hui fréquenté et habité par une communauté urbaine autochtone diverse. Nous reconnaissons que, individuellement et systématiquement, nous participons et bénéficions de la colonisation et du racisme systémique, et qu’être dans une posture d’allié-es nécessite un travail concret et profond. En cohérence avec sa mission et ses valeurs, Espace LGBTQ+ prend son devoir d’agir s’engage à créer des espaces sécuritaires qui accueillent notamment les communautés two-spirit, indigiqueer et autochtones LGBTQIA+. ABOUT ABOUT Espace LGBTQ+ œuvre au Québec, un territoire occupé depuis des millénaires par 10 Premières Nations 🡾 et la Nation Inuit 🡾 , leurs droits ancestraux 🡾 doivent être reconnus. Premières Nations Ce terme est utilisé pour définir les groupes ou Nations autochtones à travers le Québec, à l'exception des Métis et Inuit 🡵 . Cette distinction provient du domaine juridique. La Constitution canadienne reconnaît trois groupes culturels autochtones, soit les Premières Nations, les Métis et les Inuit. C’est autrefois le terme d’« Indien » qui est utilisé pour désigner collectivement les peuples autochtones au Canada qui ne sont ni Inuits ni Métis. Bien qu’on ne réfère plus ainsi aux Premières Nations aujourd’hui, la notion de « Première Nation » n’est pas l’équivalent d’« Indien » d’un point de vue juridique. Nombre de personnes membre des Premières Nations ne sont pas reconnues comme tel par le gouvernement canadien. Elles ne peuvent donc pas bénéficier du des droits et avantages accordés aux personnes dites « inscrites » en vertu de la Loi sur les Indiens 🡵 . « Premières Nations » n’est pas non plus un synonyme de « peuples autochtones », ce dernier incluant les Inuits et les Métis. Les Premières Nations au Québec sont : Nation Anishinabeg Nation Atikamekw Nation Eeyou ou Crie Nation Innue Nation Kanien’kehá:ka Nation Mi'gmaq ou Micmac Nation Naskapi ou naskapie Nation W8banaki Nation Wendat Nation Inuit Nation autochtone du Nord du Canada, dont le territoire comprend le Nunavik dans le nord du Québec, mais aussi le Nunatsiavut au nord du Labrador, le Nunavut et les Inuvialuits au nord des Territoires du Nord-Ouest 🡵 . Dans la langue inuite, l'inuktitut, le mot Inuit signifie « les gens » 🡵 . Droits ancestraux Partout au Canada, les peuples autochtones détiennent des droits sur les terres qu’occupaient et utilisaient leurs ancêtres avant la colonisation ou la formation du Canada 🡵 . Protégés par la Constitution 🡵 , ces droits sont au centre de plusieurs revendications territoriales autochtones actuelles. Il est préférable de parler de « droit ancestral » à un territoire qu’à un « territoire ancestral », qui sous-entend que la possession et l’occupation du territoire par ces communautés appartiennent au passé 🡵 . Territorires non cédés Territoires non cédés Un territoire qui n’a pas été donné ou vendu volontairement par une Nation aux colonisateurs au moyen d’un traité ou d’une autre entente 🡵 . Puisqu’aucune entente n’existe entre les parties, la terre est occupée sans permission 🡵 . Cette notion est intimement liée à celle de « traité ». Toutefois, un territoire peut être visé par un traité sans avoir été cédé volontairement 🡵 . Dans ce cas, la transmission du titre de propriété est considérée illégitime. L’expression « non cédé » est une notion légale reconnue par la Cour suprême du Canada, qui spécifie que titre autochtone sur un territoire tout aussi longtemps qu’il n’a pas été cédé ou éteint par le gouvernement fédéral 🡵 . Traité Entente négociée entre deux ou plusieurs nations souveraines 🡵 qui définit l’usage, les droits et les obligations des parties vis-à-vis de territoires ou de ressources dans une région précise 🡵 . Au Canada, les ententes par traités trouvent leur origine dans la Proclamation royale 🡵 , qui établit les principes d’un processus officiel de négociation avec les nations autochtones. Elle stipule que les terres autochtones ne peuvent être cédées qu’avec l’accord d’une Nation en échange d’une compensation équitable 🡵 . Or, de nombreux territoires ont été vendus à des prix dérisoires 🡵 , au détriment des communautés autochtones. Traités au Québec : Après la formation de la Confédération, une série de traités est signée en brève succession entre le gouvernement canadien et les Nations autochtones 🡵 . Ces traités sont utilisés par le Canada pour rapidement acquérir les droits à des terres pour les développer. Au total, 11 traités numérotés sont signés 🡵 . Aucun d’entre eux n’a été conclu au Québec. Colonisé de façon plus progressive, les traités n’ont pas été usé de la sorte assurer le contrôle du territoire québécois. La Convention de la Baie-James et du Nord québécois, signée en 1975, est le résultat des luttes par les Cris et les Inuits pour revendiquer leurs droits territoriaux non cédés, en réponse au projet de développement hydroélectrique par le gouvernement québécois. La CBJNQ est ce qui se rapproche le plus d’une “première entente moderne” entre le Québec et les Nations autochtones 🡵 . Tio’tia:ke Nom traditionnel en langue Kanien’kéha donné à l’île de Montréal, signifiant « là où les bateaux et les rivières se rencontrent » 🡵 . Le choix d’utiliser son nom Kanien’kéha met en valeur le rôle unique de la Nation Kanien’kehá:ka comme actuelle gardienne du territoire. Toutefois Tio’tia:ke est habité par une pluralité de personnes autochtones, issues des Premières Nations, Inuit et Métis 🡵 . Kanien’kehá:ka Kanien’kehá:ka La Nation Kanien’kehá:ka, aussi appelée Nation Mohawk, présente gardienne du territoire de Tio’tia:ke, notamment les communautés de Kahnawà:ke et Kanehsatà:ke. Dans la langue Kanien’kéha, signifie littéralement « peuple du silex » 🡵 . Gardiens de la porte de l'Est On suppose à tort que ce titre a été conféré par la confédération Haudenosaunee aux Kanien’kehá:ka, qui se situait le plus à l’Est du territoire et donc en contact répété avec les colons. La popularisation de ce terme viendrait toutefois des Européens 🡵 . Nous avons toutefois choisi de mentionner ce terme puisqu’il est tout de même utilisé par des personnes autochtones et membres de la confédération pour faire référence aux Kanien’kehá:ka. Cela permet notamment d’honorer le rôle de gardiens qu’iels ont joué face à l’invasion coloniale 🡵 . À savoir qu’il est souvent utilisé comme terme parapluie et inclut plusieurs autres termes, plus spécifiques. Il faut faire attention à ne pas regrouper toutes personnes autochtones LGBTQIA+ sous l’appellation Two-Spirit. Indigiqueer Un terme plus récent utilisé par certaines personnes autochtones LGBTQIA+ ne s’identifiant pas nécessairement comme Two-Spirit. Il décrit l’expérience des personnes à l’intersection d’être autochtone et queer 🡵 . Autochtones LGBTQIA+ Le terme autochtones LGBTQIA+ inclut les personnes préférant utiliser un terme spécifique à leur identité comme trans, intersexe, etc. 🡵 . HISTORY Every project has a story — ours begins with struggles, dreams, and many meetings. PROJECT ORIGINS TIMELINE FOUNDING ORGANIZATIONS PROJECT ORIGINS Since the 1960s, LGBTQ+ communities have experienced numerous mobilizations that led to the creation of many community organizations and significant social and legal gains. Despite these advances, many goals remain to be achieved and obstacles to overcome. LGBTQ+ community organizations have faced challenges in finding affordable, accessible, safe, and well-suited spaces tailored to their specific needs, located close to the living areas of their communities. Faced with this chellenge, it became clear that collective action was necessary. This is how the Espace LGBTQ+ project was initiated to address this urgent issue. By pooling efforts and resources, Espace LGBTQ+’s mission is to support the improvement of conditions and accessibility for LGBTQIA2S+ social and cultural organizations, including by developing and managing through shared responsibility a network of inclusive and diverse community hubs. By joining forces, we aspire to overcome remaining obstacles and continue moving toward a better future for the LGBTQ+ community.
