HISTORY Every project has a story — ours begins with struggles, dreams, and many meetings. PROJECT ORIGINS TIMELINE FOUNDING ORGANIZATIONS PROJECT ORIGINS Since the 1960s, LGBTQ+ communities have experienced numerous mobilizations that led to the creation of many community organizations and significant social and legal gains. Despite these advances, many goals remain to be achieved and obstacles to overcome. LGBTQ+ community organizations have faced challenges in finding affordable, accessible, safe, and well-suited spaces tailored to their specific needs, located close to the living areas of their communities. Faced with this chellenge, it became clear that collective action was necessary. This is how the Espace LGBTQ+ project was initiated to address this urgent issue. By pooling efforts and resources, Espace LGBTQ+’s mission is to support the improvement of conditions and accessibility for LGBTQIA2S+ social and cultural organizations, including by developing and managing through shared responsibility a network of inclusive and diverse community hubs. By joining forces, we aspire to overcome remaining obstacles and continue moving toward a better future for the LGBTQ+ community. Espace + Village revitalise le quartier LGBTQ+ en créant un pôle multifonctionnel inclusif, avec des espaces communautaires, culturels et de soutien. Espace + Village aims to revitalize the Village as a thriving space for community life, connection, and support for 2SLGBTQIA+ people, while highlighting the value and diversity of these communities to all Montrealers. AN INCLUSIVE AND MULTIFUNCTIONAL HUB The project includes the creation of a variety of spaces to meet the specific needs of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities served and LGBTQ+ organizations. These facilities will include community spaces, cultural venues, offices, consultation and meeting spaces, conference rooms, coworking spaces, and a multifunctional event hall, in addition to a rooftop terrace. Several spaces will be accessible to the public so that they can be rented by as many people as possible. The multifunctional room will meet a variety of needs and allow for the organization of different events open to the general public. A POSITIVE IMPACT FOR MONTREAL AND THE VILLAGE This project will significantly benefit the Village and the city of Montreal by providing a centralized hub for LGBTQ+ community resources. This hub is part of the Village's intervention strategy. By bringing these resources together in one place, Espace LGBTQ+ contributes to the preservation of quality spaces and plays a crucial role in ensuring accessibility to services for 2SLGBTQIA+ populations. Le projet Espaces communautaires pour Toustes vise à transformer le Centre-Sud en modèle d’inclusion, en mutualisant les ressources et en soutenant la cohésion sociale. COMMUNITY SPACES FOR EVERYONE What if community buildings became the pillars of a more inclusive, supportive, and resilient Centre-Sud? THE PROJECT The context Objectives Project phases COMMUNITY BUILDINGS RESOURCES AND DOCUMENTS Contact THE PROJECT The "Community Spaces for Everyone" project aims to make Centre-Sud a model of inclusion and social cohesion. We focus on the role that community buildings play in this transformation. Why community buildings? These are vibrant spaces, rich in collective knowledge, resource sharing, and collaborative approaches. We have identified five key areas to guide our work: inclusive practices universal accessibility socio-ecological transition shared space management and community life funding strategies We offer an opportunity to bring together tenant organizations and the managers of such spaces. The context Demographic Growth in Centre-Sud: Its population will increase from 45,000 to over 60,000 residents within the next 10 years. Community Space Crisis: More than 20 community organizations are at risk of losing their spaces. Objectives 01 Documenting existing expertise and inclusive practices. Suggested tools: research partnerships, interviews, and publishing initiatives in a newsletter. 02 Networking between local hubs, co-creation, and resource sharing. Suggested tools: sharing best practices, organizing meetings between space managers. 03 Spread awareness of the common needs of community hubs. Proposed tools: building profiles, advocacy. By 2030, Espace LGBTQ+ supports learning spaces by and for communities, as well as the sharing of resources and knowledge, to foster connections, care, and belonging within and between these communities. OUR VALUES INCLUSION To include and work towards respect for sexual orientation, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, and to counter all forms of discrimination related to ethnic origin or race, religious beliefs, social background, physical and psychological autonomy, or political convictions. To promote leadership and improve accessibility for marginalized people within sexual and gender diversity communities. ENGAGEMENT To practice a management style where Espace LGBTQ+ provides the environment and infrastructure, and members benefiting from the services commit to the co-creation of shared services and the development of partnerships among themselves and with other organizations.
